Hugh Mercer’s Apothecary – Hugh Mercer was born in Scotland in 1726. At fifteen years of age, he studied medicine at Aberdeen College. After graduating as a doctor, Mercer joined the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie and became Assistant Surgeon. Mercer was also present at the Battle of Culloden. The battle was a loss for the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie and all members were now considered fugitives. Mercer spent months in hiding in Scotland, then finally paid his way onto a ship and sailed to The American Colonies.
Mr. Mercer settled in an area of Pennsylvania, now called Mercersburg. In 1755, after some years practicing medicine, Mercer began treating soldiers who had been wounded in the attempt to take Fort Duquesne. Eventually Mercer began fighting in the French and Indian War, commissioned as a Captain in a Pennsylvania Regiment.
During an attack on a Native American village, Mercer was wounded and separated from his fellow soldiers. Without supplies or medical aid, Mercer hiked roughly one hundred miles to Fort Shirley. Once finding his way to the fort, Mercer was promoted to Colonel. It was around the time of his promotion that he met and became friends with Colonel George Washington. Read more…
In the chaotic suburban sprawl of eastern Virginia, it can be challenging to find peace and quiet. While driving around Fredericksburg, one of the last things you would expect to find is a silent sanctuary where nature remains free and mostly untouched. That is exactly what Alum Springs Park offers, and all within the Fredericksburg City limits.
Alum Springs Park has nearly all the attractions of the Appalachians but without the long trek. The pristine Hazel Run creek flows along the northwestern border of the park and provides visitors with a view and experience that is unique to the area. Steep drop-offs and craggy cliffs border the creek valley and create an oasis, stone cliff walls and white oak trees provide shade and cool temperatures in the summer and a windbreak from the piercing air in the winter.
Flat trails and some steeper hiking trails run throughout the park and along Hazel Run, an accommodating mixture of blood pumping hiking, and a relaxing stroll amongst the hardwoods. The Virginia Central Railway trail also runs along the southern boundary of the park; the trail being paved, offers cyclists a more relaxing and safe place to travel and exercise.
Along with the trails, Alum Springs offers all the usual amenities of a quality park; picnic tables, covered pavilion, a safe and fun playground, swings, a small building which provides restrooms and vending, and flat, open patches of land that are good for picnics and for playing with a canine companion.
Alum Springs provides a fun, beautiful, and safe environment that is quite unique to the Fredericksburg area. Consider spending a relaxing afternoon exploring an oasis juxtaposed to the hectic streets of Downtown Fredericksburg. A hike or peaceful walk amongst dappled sunlight and hearing the bubbling stream, enjoying some clear air and barbecuing with your friends, playing fetch with your dog in the lush grass. Alum Springs Park has a little bit of something for everyone.
Carl’s Ice Cream (most often, simply referred to as “Carl’s”) is a curbside ice cream stand located at 2200 Princess Anne Street, Fredericksburg, Virginia. Carl’s Ice Cream was founded in 1947, and has become one of the places that local residents simply have to take out of town friends. Since 2005, Carl’s Ice Cream, with its Art Moderne architectural facade, has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Garaffa’s Pizza, as the name suggests is a pizza restaurant, however, that statement isn’t sufficient. Garaffa’s Pizza is a “homemade pizza and pasta” restaurant. Homemade, yep, as in made from scratch.
Notable: The next thing that is highly noteworthy is that savory, velvety Sicilian tomato sauce that adorns the pizza and pasta dishes served up piping hot and fresh at Garaffa’s Pizza. I am most definitely a huge fan of this awesome sauce.
Ricky shares that this sauce is passed down from his Sicilian grandfather. Now, you could be a skeptic and think the “Sicilian sauce” thing is merely a marketing ploy. If so, you haven’t tasted it. Regardless, let me repeat a short personal story that I have shared before. My daughter visited Italy a couple of years ago. Upon her return, she asked to go to Garaffa’s Pizza for dinner. She informed us before, and confirmed again after dinner, that the sauce at Garaffa’s Pizza was the only sauce she had tasted in America that was truly like the sauce she had tasted while in Italy. ABCDieselZ is a lifted performance diesel truck dealership offering a line of diesel trucks, parts and a service department that offers general and specialized service.
About our interview with ABCDieselZ:
During our interview, the overriding take away for us, was the passion that Jason has for the people they serve. This is a business that creates some really cool lifted performance diesel trucks. When I asked him, “What is the most fun thing you do here?” I expected to hear about big lifted trucks, or something about the performance design that goes into the trucks. Yet, after a moment of reflection, he looked at me and said, “The people, I love the people.”
